Paul Cézanne - artworks

French painter Paul Cézanne wanted to present the world in a new way and influence people's impressions, which is why he broke with many artistic traditions. The changes that took place in his artistic career and painting technique had a huge impact on contemporary art. Meet Paul Cézanne, his life and paintings.

Cézanne's early life and education

To get to know and understand Paul Cézanne's art better, it is worth delving into the history of his life and work as an artist. Paul Cézanne was born on October 19, 1839. He grew up in Aix-en-Provence, France. His mother died when he was a child. It is known that his father wanted him to be a lawyer or politician, not an artist. So he sent him to law school, but Cézanne dropped out of college after a while and started painting instead. Soon after, he also persuaded his father to his works, which allowed him to go to Paris to study art.

He was mainly among artists who rejected the neoclassical and romantic art of painting, which in those days was not met with the approval of the majority, which is why such works were exhibited at the so-called discard exhibitions - Salon des Refusés.

He went through different periods and styles in his artistic career, but he is known mainly for his paintings, which combined impressionism of the end of the 19th century and cubism of the beginning of the 20th century. Vivid colors and straight surfaces were characteristic of his painting technique. His paintings often depicted still life, portraits and landscapes. He painted many still lifes with fruits and vegetables, which - due to their geometric forms - he considered to be objects worth studying (in Cézanne's paintings even an ordinary thing had a clearly sculptural dimension).

Cézanne's innovative approach to painting had a huge impact on cubism and art, which is why he is often called the father of modern art. In the world of artists, he was considered - as Picasso and Braque called him - "the father of us all".

Paul Cézanne - the most popular paintings

  • Still Life Apples - Cézanne's semi-sculptural approach to painting still life resulted in fame in the world of artists. He preferably depicted apples, pears and peaches, which were scattered on the table accompanied by canvases, boards, jugs and bottles.
  • A series of paintings depicting the Sainte-Victoire mountain is a place that has become an inherent part of Paul Cézanne's memories. Mount Sainte-Victoire is close to the town where he grew up. For many years, the artist created works showing this landscape from different perspectives and at different times of the year. It is these works that best reflect the changes that have taken place in Cézanne's painting technique over the years.
  • Bathers - Cézanne was known for his love of nudity. Women bathing in the river often appeared in his paintings.
  • Madame Cezanne in a yellow armchair - the portrait of Paul Cézanne's wife was created at the turn of 1888-1890 in an apartment he rented in Paris.

  • Gardanne - the picture painted in 1885 shows the town of Gardanne in France (Provence, Cote d'Azur).
  • Works depicting the bank of the Marne River - this is also a series of paintings that reflect the landscape around the French river. Cézanne, I love to paint the nature of northern France, capturing its charm wonderfully in my paintings.
