Vincent van Gogh - short biography and interesting facts

Vincent Van Gogh's works have had an amazing influence on contemporary art. His still life paintings have made him considered one of the greatest artist painters around the world.

Van Gogh, the eldest of six children of a Protestant pastor, was born on March 30, 1853 in the Netherlands. As a youth, he spent a lot of time hiking and nature observation. He worked in galleries in London and Paris, where everyday contact with works of art aroused his artistic sensitivity. Stimulated by a desire to serve humanity, he also worked for a time as a language teacher and lay preacher.

Vincent Van Gogh's life was not the easiest one. He suffered from epilepsy and depression throughout his life. Unfortunately, the fight against the worsening disease ended tragically for Vincent. The painter took his own life in 1989 with a shot in the chest.

Van Gogh worked in the years 1880-1890. He devoted his first years to perfecting and expanding his technical knowledge - he studied drawing at the Brussels Academy, in The Hague he worked with the Dutch landscape painter Anton Mauve, he often visited museums and met other artists. He was inspired by the works of such great painters as Hals, Paolo Veronese, Eugène Delacroix, Rubens, Jean-François Millet and Camille Corot, as well as Japanese prints and impressionist paintings. The greatest changes in his painting work took place in Paris in 1886-88, when he created his personal brush style. It was then that his post-impressionist style crystallized.

A decade of outstanding painting works by Vincent van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh's artistic career was extremely short, as it lasted only 10 years. When creating his paintings, he tried to respect the external, visual aspect of a character or landscape, but always made them more powerful through the arbitrary use of color. Thus, his paintings seemed more dramatic and emphasized the contrast in the scene. Van Gogh worked spontaneously and instinctively to capture his emotions as quickly as possible.

This Dutch painter has created over 2,000 works, including 870 paintings, 150 watercolors and over 1,000 drawings and 133 letter sketches. If you are wondering how many paintings Vincent van Gogh has sold, the answer may surprise you a lot. Although he is now highly recognizable and his paintings are worth millions of colors, unfortunately van Gogh sold only one painting "Red Vineyards" in his entire life.

The most popular works by Vincent van Gogh include:

  • "Self-portrait with a bandaged ear and pipe" from 1889 - most of us associate Van Gogh with the lack of an ear. Why did he lose it? Vincent himself officially cut it off with a razor. However, the authors of "Van Gogh's Ear" claim that a friend of the artist Gauguin, he cut off Van Gogh's ear with a sword during one of their frequent quarrels. However, they both refused to admit it.
  • Paintings "Sunflowers" - Vincent van Gogh painted 12 pictures with a sunflower motif. There are five of these paintings in museums. They all show the same bouquet in a ceramic pot, on a yellow or pale blue background.
